Cross-cultural Identity Through Clay Drawing. Project Detail

The title of the proposed activity is called  Cross-cultural Identity Through Clay Drawing. This project will take place in the studio space during the residency at the Bundanon Trust, New South Wales, Australia delivered by Wen-Hsi and Martin Harman.

The Aim

The activity will be about exploring drawing and mark making through clay on paper. It should hopefully allow us the platform to explore the potential of clay from a perspective that is different to creating a 3d object. It is hoped this opportunity can give us another way of generating and expressing ideas through a 2d process. The inspiration for this will come from unpacking the layers of meanings behind different materials, surrounding landscape, different cultural backgrounds between Taiwan UK and Australia and found objects from the surrounding landscape. Therefore the project will be very much focused on the process and making this visible that will contribute towards an outcome. This process should give us a different approach to creative thinking.

The Process

We would like the opportunity to explore materials and the process of drawing and mark making on paper using clay dug from the ground from the local area. We are going to make our own tools from objects such as sticks and stones etc or found tools from the studio and use our body as tools to create mark making through drawing on paper. This process will also focus on writing as a form of making ad well as drawing imagery.Importantly Martin and Wen-Hsi will be involved with each others making process. We would like to layer new work on top of each other work. This will provide a platform for us to think the about what a finished piece means and to consciously consider our actions.Alongside this, we intend to document the project through photographs, videos, interviews, and writings that will be displayed on the Clay of Culture blog. People interested can access the journey of the project from start to finish to find out further information such as inspiration and its progress. In addition, we will set up a hashtag on social media called #drawingthroughclay that can be used on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter so that everyone involved and anyone that would like to give it a go can share what they have created or anything that relates to the theme of the project.

What do we hope to Achieve

We hope to give ourselves an opportunity to be aware of the different process.Importantly this project will be based on cooperation and teamwork.Nearing the end of the project we would like to transform the studio space into an exhibition space to showcase our finished outcomes. Showcased next to the finished pieces will also be documentation of the project. This will consist of photos, interviews, and writing selected from the blog. It is indented that this will provide viewers with the opportunity to further understand how the project was created and to engage the audience on another level.
When this project is finished and we arrive back in the UK we would like to hold an exhibition and workshops as this will be an ongoing project.
