An example of a geological map of Taiwan drawn from the Japanese who investigated Taiwan's resources. Please see http://www.laijohn.com/Mackay/study/geology/Hayasaka,I.htm for the original image location and credit.

Working on the detail of Taiwan. We are referencing this with the geological map we found located above this image.
Continuing to work on a drawing of the Australian house located near our accommodation.
We have also cut out the clay prints of Martin's hands and feet and are thinking about gluing them to the surface. At the moment they are stuck on with a bit of masking tape as we might re-position them.
Wen-Hsi started to add more watercolour to her rock clay painting.
Wen-Hsi decided to add gold pen, fine liner pen, and traditional Chinese characters onto her rock clay painting.
In the end, Wen-Hsi sprayed the picture with varnish to increase the depth of colour.
Martin's thoughts about this residency so far.
During this residency so far I have been thinking of how nature makes me appreciate the simple things in life. This is in contrast to living in the city where money is king and the consumption of products is constantly around me. It got me thinking that perhaps this endless consumption of material goods is unnecessary to a large degree. Then again I suppose you could say the same thing about art, as in some way it too can become a product of consumption. However, it is usually hand-made, one-off and intentionally imbued with meaning to require the viewer to ask questions about what they are seeing. I realized that being in this isolated place makes me care less about the so-called rat race of urban life as it can often seem as though there is a drive towards competition and egotism.
Wen-Hsi thoughts about this residency so far.
I am enjoying the freedom from this residency and the respect towards the artist's privacy within the natural environment. No one will check my schedule or progression. I also have enough individual space to create my work and I can concentrate to think about my artistic development and don't need to think too much about public engagement. However still enjoy meeting the public audience to exchange my thoughts. It is very wonderful to just focus on my own artistic development, it is a luxury time even if it is just 12 days.
I have also found some time to take a walk and observe the animals such as kangaroo, wombat, and birds. At the moment, I am continuing to develop a series of rock clay paintings. I still need to reflect our theme: cross-cultural identity through clay drawing and my experience of living in-between different cultures.
Only 5 days left and so we are mainly using our time to work on this large drawing.
